32. New and Everlasting Covenant used to mean Polygamy only

Celestial marriage and polygamy were the same thing until this definitions was changed in 1933: Smith and other nineteenth-century Mormons taught that plural marriage was necessary for complete salvation, while such a theological connection is never made in the Old Testament.

1933, Talmage’s argument received formal imprimatur when Heber J. Grant, president of the church, issued an official statement declaring that “celestial marriage—that is, marriage for time and eternity—and polygamous marriage are not synonymous terms.” Rather, Grant wrote, “Monogamous marriages solemnized in our temples are celestial marriages.”
