1933, Talmage’s argument received formal imprimatur when Heber J. Grant, president of the church, issued an official statement declaring that “celestial marriage—that is, marriage for time and eternity—and polygamous marriage are not synonymous terms.” Rather, Grant wrote, “Monogamous marriages solemnized in our temples are celestial marriages.”
